University of Minnesota, Minneapolis (East Bank) -- Introductory Zentangle Workshop for Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI)
  • Date: Four-session package on Thursday, February 8 to March 1, 2018
  • Time: 1:45 - 3:15 p.m.
  • Place: McNamara Alumni Center, Room 235
Course description: Zentangle is a drawing method that enables people of all abilities to create beautiful images by using repeating patterns. Many of these are reminiscent of traditional decorative designs from the Americas, Europe, Africa, the Middle East, and Asia. The Zentangle Method teaches people how to recreate these designs using pen and paper, drawing deconstructed patterns "one stroke at a time." This makes learning them more a matter of applying focused attention and practice than having specialized artistic skills.

General information about Zentangle Workshops

Introductory Zentangle Workshops

Description: Come spend two + fun-filled and creative hours learning the Zentangle Method of drawing with an enthusiastic Certified Zentangle Teacher (me!). I am a Teaching Specialist by trade (at the University of Minnesota) and have been exploring and enjoying Zentangle drawing for nearly three years, so you can expect clear instruction from a patient and experienced guide. During this workshop, you will learn how to assemble simple elements into complex structures of great beauty. It is common for people to create drawings they never thought possible during the first session.

Focused Workshops

Description: These workshops are for people who have taken an introductory Zentangle course (with me or anyone else), or for those who have been tangling on their own and have a good basic grasp of the method. In this workshop, the tangles I introduce are more advanced, and students learn some basics of design and composition that go beyond using a string. In particular, students learn to create Zentangle compositions with greater flow by using individual tangles that work closely together to form an overall design, instead of each tangle appearing to fill one area of a tile, each to the next. Other topics may include working with color, creating compositions in different sizes (larger) or shapes (mandalas and triangles).

Location: Minneapolis. For now, all classes will be held at Calhoun Shores, at the corner of East Calhoun Parkway and 31st Street (my apartment building). I have just moved to Minneapolis from the north metro area and am looking into new venues in this area, e.g., community education centers. Maybe by the end of January, I will have more information. I'll update this page when necessary.

In order to make it easy for everyone to see what I am drawing, I use a document camera, a device that projects my drawing area onto a large screen viewable by all participants.
