1,001 Pearls of Life-Changing Wisdom

Life is the art of drawing without an eraser. ~ John Christian

I picked up 1,001 Pearls of Life-Changing Wisdom by Elizabeth Venstra for inspirational quotes I might use in blog posts. Today's quote is so well-suited to Zentangle that I had to post it first.

This tile grew out of few feelings tired, uninspired, and ready to begin exploring Zentangle as nourishment for my own imagination. Most interesting for me is the way the tile started, with a simple set of horizontal lines, similar to notebook
paper. I had the idea to draw an image that would have the feeling of a secret language.

The idea has long been with me. I made the drawing to the right many years ago with the same intention -- to create an image that might convey the idea of a secret language or code. The idea of having a piece of art convey significant meaning that is entirely non-verbal is deeply appealing.

In viewing the two drawings together, I wonder if I should begin making drawings moving from overall composition to detail. In my Zentangle phase (the last few years), I've learned about detailed design and have been focused on that, often to the exclusion of overall composition. Fortunately, I learned a lot about composition when I took art courses in my undergrad days. Maybe it's time to focus more on integrating knowledge from different periods of my life in my art work.
